Kandawgyi Garden

In the large city of Yangon, Kandawgyi Garden is also sometimes known as Kandawgyi Nature Park.  It is popular with both locals and tourist, with plenty of things to do and see and numerous opportunities for both fun and relaxation.

A major feature within the large Kandawgyi Garden is the Kandawgyi Lake.  The name translates in English as The Great Lake.  Trees surround the lake and it is a charming and lovely spot, great for escaping the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoying a place of relative tranquillity.  Karaweik Hall sits on the water, resembling mythical birds rising up out of the shimmering depths of the water.  The golden colours twinkle in the sunshine, casting magical reflections on the lake’s surface.
A boardwalk runs around the lake, allowing you to easily admire the excellent views.  An abundance of flora and fauna call the garden home.  There is also a nice zoo, an interesting aquarium, a lovely orchid garden, play areas for the kids, places to eat and drink, small souvenir shops, and a children’s amusement park.  It is a popular place for recreation with locals and tourists alike.  The wide open green spaces are great for a picnic lunch – take your food with you, find a spot in the shade, and sit down and relax whilst enjoying the calm and peaceful atmosphere.  See children playing, teenagers chatting, and couples strolling.

 Visiting Guide

The lake is 150 acres and the parkland is 110 acres.  Kandawgyi Garden is an excellent attraction in Yangon for everyone – whether you are visiting the city on your own, with friends, or with the family, and whether you are there on business or for pleasure, a few hours in the charming Kandawgyi Garden is a popular thing to do.
Every year in November there are exciting boat races and a regatta held at the lake.  Many people come down to watch the events, and there is a lively atmosphere with lots of fun.
The gleaming spires of the Shwedagon Pagoda can be seen in the nearby distance; it takes around ten minutes to travel between the two places by foot.
The Kandawgyi Garden is open between 4am and 10pm each day and there is a small admission fee.
