Shan Noodle in Yangon

One of the most famous dishes in Myanmar, Shan Noodle has origin from Shan State. Burmese people eat noodle for lunch, dinner and probably at any time of the day. You can enjoy it with or without salad.
There are two types of rice noodles: “San See” which is sticky and flat or “Yay Sein” which is round,thin shaped and not sticky.

The famous big bright yellow smiley face of Happy Café & Noodles can be found in quite a few places in town. They serve a lot of different kinds of noodles from all over the country including rakhine and Shan. The most enjoyable setting is in the garden of the beautiful colonial building which shelters the Inya Road branch. Their patio is the place to go for some relaxing drinks and a couple of shared plates of Myanmar foods.

Putao is the northernmost town of Kachin State, up near the beautiful Hkakabo Razi snow-capped mountain. The food served in this Putao restaurant is mainly Kachin food, but they also serve a few Thai dishes. Their cuisine is made from plenty of greens and interesting potatos, and is then spiced with a Putao variant of the dreaded “gullah-authee” chilis.

This local restaurant hidden in the small streets behind the city hall serves some of the freshest and tastiest noodles and soups in town. The pork rib noodles are particularly delectable. The owner is very friendly and is always happy to give advice about local foods. A perfect place for a cheap and yummy food-stop downtown.

This Shan restaurant specialises in dishes from the Inle Lake area. The Inthar people eat to suit the weather and geographical location, which means a lot of fish and turmeric which is said to help fight off malaria and fever. Their noodle dishes are delicious, but while you’re at it, try their traditional morning snack “hin htote” – steamed rice powder with onion leaves, and flavoured with ju myit (an edible root) and fried garlic.

Shan Yoe Yar is the very first Shan-style fine dining restaurant in the city. Set in an attractive,air-conditioned restaurant with renovated wood, there is a fine selection of well-known and lesser known Shan dishes, including the famous Shan Noodles.

Try their fish and bamboo rice noodle soup! The steamed pork rib and beef ball soups are also worth the try. We appreciate that Kachin noodles are less oily than Shan noodles.
